In recent months, Australian Bauxite has managed to increase the sale of so-called fertiliser-grade bauxites: they have high concentrations of phosphorus, therefore can be used to produce superphosphate. Superphosphate is produced from such bauxites by acid leaching. However, the details of this technology are not known for certain. Australian Bauxite launched production at the Bald Hill bauxite mine in Tasmania in December 2014. That was the first new bauxite mine to be built in Australia in more than 35 years.
