Gas prices have ruined the plant.

Yara International, a Norwegian producer of mineral fertilizers (hereinafter – Yara) has announced the closure of its ammonia plant in Point Lisas (Trinidad and Tobago). Its capacity is only 270 thousand tons of ammonia per year.

The plant is characterized by low energy efficiency and profitability impacted by the ammonia price decline. Moreover, the negotiations with the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago over the affordable cost of supplying natural gas to the plant were unsuccessful. So, the plant will now be shut down before the end of this year.

The closure process is expected to cost $ 25 million in total. Nevertheless, Yara still has two other ammonia plants in Trinidad and Tobago.
