# Germany has tightened agrochemical legislation

Publication Date: 08.04.2020, 12:26

Bundesrat has approved an important fertilizer regulation.

The German parliament approved a new regulation on nitrogen fertilizers, which allows the country to avoid the need to pay high penalties to the EU budget. However, many German farmers are already unhappy with it, as they will have to reduce nitrogen fertilizer application on cultivated land next year due to the stringent requirements.

At the same time, the parliament was able to obtain an extension of the deadline for the new rules to come into force. It must now be completed by January 1, 2021, three months later than initially specified.

It is worth noting that the European Union authorities had been demanded for many years that the German government toughen the legislation on circulation of agrochemicals. In 2017, it introduced changes to it, but they were considered insufficient, given the high nitrate levels in German groundwaters.
