# Stavropol region will test phosphogypsum on its fields

Excess sodium will be removed from the soil.

As the press-service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Stavropol region reports, two agricultural enterprises of the Stavropol region plan to experiment in 2021 with the introduction of phosphogypsum into the fields.

Every year in the region, a deterioration of 20 thousand hectares of agricultural land is recorded due to an excess of sodium. The application of phosphogypsum will change the situation and improve soil properties, as well as increase the yield of crops.

The principle of the method lies in removing harmful salts from the soil, reducing the content of hydrogen and aluminum, as well as sodium, which impairs the chemical, physical, and biological properties of the soil.

“The application of gypsum, including phosphogypsum, will increase soil fertility and provide an increase in yield by 5-10% per hectare, and will also improve the permeability of the fertile layer by almost 20 times. This unique method will help to save funds of agricultural organizations,” said Vyacheslav Dryiger, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Stavropol region.
