# Zimbabwe drowned in rains

Rainfall has affected productivity.

Zimbabwean farmers are sounding the alarms due to heavy rains that have hit the country in the past few weeks, causing flooding and leaching of mineral fertilizers.

“Such heavy rains are too expensive for farmers. Farmers have to apply fertilizers twice and even more, as mineral fertilizers are washed out. While in favorable weather they could do this only once,” said Shadreck Makombe, President of Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union.

Zimbabwe’s economy is based on agriculture. Earlier, the country’s authorities predicted its growth by 11.3% in 2021, compared with a decline of 0.2% in 2020.

Even though the sowing season has started well, incessant rains now threaten it, affecting crops of corn, tobacco and beans.
