Baikal may be saved and disaster avoided.

An employee of the Irkutsk National Research Technical University, Anastasia Shatrova won the grants competition of the President of Russia. Her project Research of the Intensification of Processes of Reclamation Succession on Disturbed Lands by Waste from the Pulp and Paper Industry was highly assessed. Within two years, Anastasia Shatrova will receive 1.2 million rubles (about $16 thousand) to implement her project.

“The pulp and paper industry is a great part of the total mass of the non-recyclable waste. Issue of processing colloidal sediments of sludge-lignin of the closed Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill is particularly sensitive. The volume of accumulated waste amounts to 8 million cubic meters. In case of an accident with the waterproofing coating of the storage cards, a large-scale socio-ecological manmade disaster may occur. It will lead to irreversible consequences for Lake Baikal,” said Anastasia Shatrova.

According to her project, sludge-lignin is an organic waste-water mud and may be used as fertilizer for reclamation of disturbed lands.
