# Sri Lanka is studying opportunities to launch carbamide production

Import independence has captured the minds of officials.

The Government of Sri Lanka instructed the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology to study the possibilities for launching carbamide production in the country.

This initiative was suggested by the Ministry of Industry of Sri Lanka due to the losses of the state budget as a result of foreign exchange differences arising from the import of carbamide.

Sri Lanka’s annual demand for carbamide is at least 340 thousand tons. In 2019, Sri Lanka’s budget expenditures for the purchasing of carbamide amounted to 26 billion rupees (approximately $138 million).

The project to create a plant may be implemented by the state-owned company Paranthan Chemicals.
