# Switzerland plans to create mineral fertilizer reserves

Publication Date: 18.01.2022, 18:00

The authorities are concerned about the near future.

The Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research of Switzerland introduced a decree, which provides for the creation of stocks of mineral fertilizers in the country.

This decision was taken last year, amid a sharp increase in prices for mineral fertilizers, caused by a rise in the price of natural gas in Europe and the suspension of several chemical plants. A stable supply of fertilizers is crucial for agriculture in Switzerland since the country does not produce any fertilizers, importing them from around the world.

On the eve of spring field works, a reliable supply of mineral fertilizers, especially nitrogen, to the Swiss farmers is the key to a good harvest amid disruptions in supply chains due to restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and high prices for fertilizers. At the end of December 2021, nitrogen fertilizer stocks in Switzerland amounted to 17 thousand tons.
