# New port for shipment of Belarusian fertilizers will be built in the Leningrad region

The decision has been made.

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, following negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that the Russian leader, in response to his request, initiated the construction of a new port in the Leningrad region for the transshipment of Belarusian fertilizers.

“I asked to build a port near St. Petersburg, so we could transship millions of tons of cargo there. Orders were given in my presence to start this construction immediately,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

Due to US sanctions against Belaruskali, on February 1, Lithuania stopped the railway transit of Belarusian fertilizers. The agreement on the railway transportations through Lithuania and loading in the port of Klaipeda 11 million tons of Belarusian fertilizers per year was signed in 2018 and should have lasted until 2023.

In response, from February 7, Belarus banned rail transit through its territory of oil products and mineral fertilizers loaded in Lithuania.
