The rise in prices for nitrogen fertilizers and their shortage can lead to serious problems in French agriculture, says National Assembly member Pierre Vatin. The cost of fertilizers in the country was affected by the sanctions adopted against Russia. France is importing nitrogen fertilizers since domestic production can provide only a third of the required volumes. However, a few months ago, fertilizer prices reached record levels following the increase in natural gas prices. Pierre Vatin believes that this happened due to the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia. “European producers of nitrogen fertilizers depend on natural gas and therefore have reduced their output,” he said. Pierre Vatin noted that French farmers fear a shortage of nitrogen fertilizers in the spring of 2023. The consequences of the shortage will be serious for agriculture and may lead to a reduction in the arable area and a drop in yields.
