# Ireland asks to eliminate duties on fertilizer imports

The government is seriously concerned about their availability.

The European Union authorities should consider lifting customs duties on imports of mineral fertilizers as soon as possible, said the Minister of Agriculture of Ireland, Charlie McConalogue.

Currently, Irish farmers may receive over €45 million for purchases of mineral fertilizers under the European Union’s subsidies program.

However, Charlie McConalogue believes that it’s necessary to take more decisive short-term measures to ensure food security amid the global geopolitical crisis. For example, terminate previously imposed duties on the import of mineral fertilizers into the European Union.

“The current situation has caused big problems regarding the import of feed and mineral fertilizers,” said Charlie McConalogue. “The Irish government is seriously concerned about the availability and cost of fertilizers. As we strive to reach alternative suppliers, in the short-term, the possibility of eliminating customs duties on mineral fertilizers should be considered.”
