# Uzbekistan launches green hydrogen project

The country is seeking to decarbonize fertilizer production.

Uzbekistan’s president, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has kickstarted plans to establish a green hydrogen project in the city of Chirchiq, in the Tashkent region, local media reported on Monday.

The country says that it is aiming to produce 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year, which, in turn, will enable it to manufacture 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia per annum.

The project will be undertaken by the state-owned company Uzkimyosanoat in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power.

The first phase of the venture will involve the installation of wind turbines in the Bukhara region. They will power the electrolyzers used for hydrogen production. The turbines will initially have a 52MW capacity; this will subsequently increase to 2.4GW.

According to Uzbek media, once the project is fully operational, the country will be able to reduce its use of natural gas in fertilizer production by 33 million cubic meters per year.
