The Nigerian and Indonesian governments have signed a memorandum of understanding outlining their intention to establish a coal-based fertilizer plant in Abuja, the capital of the West African state, Nigerian media reported this week. As part of the project, Indonesia’s PT Saputra Global Harvest will supply technology and machinery to Nigeria’s National Agency for Science and Engineering Technology (NASENI). It will also train local personnel. Nigerian officials said that the facility will support the country’s agriculture sector and, crucially, enhance food security. A NASENI representative was quoted as saying that the country not only wants to achieve food self-sufficiency, but to produce a surplus for export. The Indonesian ambassador, meanwhile, welcomed the partnership, saying he is confident that Saputra’s wealth of experience and state-of-the-art technology will yield ‘substantial benefits’ for the local agriculture sector.
