The Philippine government, through the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), has announced the allocation of P10 billion ($177.53mn) towards fuel and fertilizer assistance for local farmers. This funding initiative, part of the 2024 national budget, aims to strengthen food production and supply while providing substantial support to the backbone of the country’s economy – the farmers. Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing food security and extending necessary assistance to local farmers, acknowledging their pivotal role in the nation’s economy and communities. “Apart from fortifying the production and supply of food in the country, our beloved President wishes to provide proper support to our local farmers. The role they play in our economy and community is crucial,” Pangandaman stated. The government assures continuous efforts in identifying and implementing optimal solutions to support the agricultural sector. A significant portion of the budget, amounting to P9.561 billion ($169.74mn), is dedicated to fertilizer discount vouchers, which will be distributed through the Production Support Services of the National Rice Program under the Department of Agriculture (DA). Of the total allocation for fertilizer assistance, P6.161 billion ($109.37mn) is earmarked for the Hybrid Seed Program of the DA, complementing its efforts in hybrid seed distribution. The remaining P3.4 billion ($60.36mn) is allocated for the Inbred Certified Seed Program, targeting the enhancement of local rice seed distribution across rice-producing regions, with the ultimate goal of boosting farmers’ yields. In addition to fertilizer support, the DBM has set aside P510.4 million ($9m) for fuel assistance to farmers. This budget includes the operating expenses necessary for the efficient distribution of the aid, ensuring that the assistance reaches the farmers in a timely and organized manner.
