The facility, located in the Sines industrial zone, will produce green hydrogen and green ammonia.

MAIRE announced on Monday that Tecnimont (Integrated E&C Solutions) has been awarded a FEED contract by MadoquaPower2X to develop an integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia plant in the industrial zone of Sines, Portugal.

The company said the project will involve the production of green hydrogen using alkaline-water electrolyzer technology and green ammonia through the Haber-Bosch process. The green ammonia will be transported by pipeline to the Port of Sines, where it will be loaded for export and/or used as maritime fuel.

MAIRE said that Tecnimont will be responsible for designing and integrating the electrolyzers, the air separation unit for nitrogen production, the ammonia production plant, and storage and ship-loading facilities.

It added that, as part of the agreement, Tecnimont will also submit an Engineering, Procurement and Construction proposal for the construction activities of the plant. The Final Notice to Proceed is expected by March 22.

MAIRE noted that the award follows a PRE-FEED carried out by NextChem Tech, MAIRE’s Sustainable Technology Solutions subsidiary, and said that Tecnimont’s provision of EPC expertise will build on NextChem Tech’s technological specialism in hydrogen production and storage.

The Sines facility will use renewable energy generated by solar and wind assets under development in Portugal and up to 500 MWs of electrolysis capacity to produce up to 1,200 tonnes per day of green ammonia.

Maire said it will be the first plant in the area to produce clean energy at an industrial scale and to the highest environmental and safety standards.

The project is geared towards the establishment of an export energy carrier value chain between the Port of Sines and north-western Europe.
