Iraq's prime minister has opened two fertilizer factories near Basra, eliminating the need for imports.

Iraq’s prime minister, Shi’a al-Sudani, has inaugurated two new fertilizer factories near the city of Basra during a tour of the southern province.

His media office said in a statement that the first is a urea fertilizer plant with a daily production capacity of 1,000 tonnes; the second is a DAP plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes.

Both of the facilities, which are part of the Southern State Company for Fertilizers, had been out of action for years, but were recently redeveloped by foreign companies.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani said that the fertilizer factories’ output will be sufficient to meet the demand of farmers following the national agricultural plan, and will eliminate the need for imports.
