# Atlas Agro begins engineering on its green nitrogen fertilizer plant in Brazil

Publication Date: 15.03.2024, 10:00

Embarking on sustainable agriculture, the company plans to fuel local farming with renewable energy by 2028.

Atlas Agro has officially started the engineering phase of its inaugural green nitrogen fertilizer plant in Uberaba, in the southern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The Switzerland-based enterprise announced that it has engaged two engineering and construction consortiums to undertake parallel competitive project engineering development.

The move is aimed at propelling Brazil towards self-sufficiency in green nitrogen fertilizer production, minimizing the country’s current dependence on imported fertilizers, which are predominantly produced using fossil fuels.

Following the completion of this initial engineering phase, Atlas Agro intends to move the project into the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage. The ambitious timeline set by the company forecasts the commencement of construction activities in 2025, with the goal of achieving commercial operation by 2028.

Atlas Agro’s Brazilian plant will consume 2.5 TWh of renewable energy annually. This substantial energy input will support an integrated industrial process that produces green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green ammonium nitrate. These eco-friendly products are intended to benefit local Brazilian farmers by providing sustainable fertilizer options.

The facility will build on the  expertise and experience that Atlas Agro gained during the development of its first green nitrogen fertilizer project in the Pacific Northwest, United States. This venture underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging renewable energy sources for fertilizer production and contributing to the global effort to combat climate change.
