Topsoe collaborates with CF Industries to advance low-carbon ammonia production through cutting-edge technology.

Topsoe has been awarded a contract by CF Industries, the world’s largest ammonia producer, to license and provide engineering support for a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study of a new low-carbon ammonia plant in Louisiana, USA. The partnership marks a significant step in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

The project, conducted in collaboration with Mitsui & Co., Ltd., a prominent global ammonia marketer, involves the licensing of Topsoe’s proprietary SynCOR Ammonia technology. This technology, combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS), facilitates the production of low-carbon ammonia, positioning it as a leading industry solution for reducing carbon emissions.

Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director for The Americas at Topsoe, highlighted the potential of low-carbon ammonia as a pivotal element in achieving net-zero emissions globally. He noted, “We believe low-carbon ammonia helps unlock the door towards a net-zero future. Our technology offers a cost-effective route to producing low-carbon ammonia while also enabling carbon capture, at an industrially proven scale.”

The anticipated low-carbon ammonia facility in Louisiana aims to produce ammonia that can be used as a decarbonized energy source. Ammonia’s versatility extends beyond fuel and hydrogen carrier applications; it is also instrumental in decarbonizing industrial processes such as steel and cement production.
