Marolda Farms Inc from Vineland, NJ, known for its extensive range of organically and conventionally grown leafy greens and herbs, is venturing into new territory with the introduction of organic figs under their Rock & Roll Organics label. This addition marks a significant step in the farm’s continuous expansion into organic agriculture, which commenced in 2008 with just five acres and has since grown to over 120 acres dedicated to organic produce. The farm, led by Rich and Sherry Marolda and their son, Richard Marolda Jr., the Production Manager, has long been a symbol of both agricultural innovation and family collaboration. Richard Jr., in particular, has been instrumental in pushing the farm’s organic agenda, a commitment evident from the steady increase in land allocated to organic farming, including a recent addition of 30 acres. “The market itself shows annual increases in organic sales, which is promising,” Richard Jr. commented, noting the improved profit margins for organic produce despite higher cultivation costs and management challenges. “For me, the growth I am seeing in sales correlates with me having my own retail label from Day 1 and it gives me something to work off of,” he added. In addition to organic figs, Marolda Farms plans to experiment with organic passionfruit and is working towards new certifications, including fair labor and PrimusGFS food safety audits. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to embrace regenerative agricultural practices, with plans to integrate a crimping system into vegetable production after experimenting with soybeans and grain corn. Marolda Farms is also committed to sustainable pest management practices, phasing out synthetic fertilizers in favor of organic options, a change that supports their holistic approach to agriculture.
