New fertilizer plant in Veracruz aims to reduce dependency on imports and enhance local farming productivity.

Mota-Engil has secured a $1.2 billion contract with Pemex Transformación Industrial to construct a cutting-edge fertilizer production facility in Poza Rica, Veracruz. The plant is designed to produce key agricultural inputs, including ammonia, urea, and AdBlue, a diesel exhaust fluid essential for modern farming machinery.

Annually, the facility is expected to produce over 700,000 metric tons of fertilizer, potentially slashing Mexico’s substantial fertilizer import costs. This development comes at a critical time as Mexico strives to reduce its dependency on imported fertilizers, which have historically burdened local farmers with high costs and unpredictable supply chains.

The project schedule includes a six-month preliminary study phase, followed by a 42-month construction period. Post-construction, Mota-Engil will oversee the plant’s operations for 20 years. The operational contract includes a performance-based payment structure, ensuring efficiency and accountability, aligning with international standards for industrial projects.

Beyond the direct benefits to agriculture, the initiative is expected to generate thousands of jobs, significantly boosting the local economy and supporting community development in Poza Rica and surrounding areas. Mota-Engil’s commitment to sustainable practices and community engagement further enhances the project’s appeal, setting a new standard for industrial projects in terms of environmental and social responsibility.
