Cronus Chemicals LLC has secured a crucial Construction and Air Permit from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its new ammonia production facility in Tuscola, Illinois. The facility is expected to make a substantial impact on both the national and global food supply chains, utilizing advanced thyssenkrupp Uhde technology to produce about 950,000 short tons of ammonia annually. The plant’s location, which is surrounded by three interstate gas pipelines, ensures ample natural gas resources, facilitating competitive pricing and enhanced operational efficiency.

According to the company’s statement, the U.S. market, and Illinois in particular, faces a growing demand for ammonia, which is primarily used as a fertilizer in agriculture. Illinois is the largest consumer of agricultural ammonia in the country, making the location of Project Cronus optimal for addressing this demand. The construction also benefits from a Project Labor Agreement with North America Building Trades Unions, ensuring a skilled labor force is ready to support the construction and operation of the facility.
