# Indian Farmers’ Union accuses local government of betraying farmers

Publication Date: 30.10.2024, 10:00

At a major gathering in the Indian district Prayagraj, the local farmer's union leader voices strong concerns over issues affecting the agricultural community, including fertilizer shortages and unfair land compensations.

Rakesh Tikait, the national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Indian Farmers’ Union**,**BKU), has criticized the government for failing the farming community during a farmers’ meeting held at Mundera Mandi on Sunday. Tikait highlighted several pressing issues, including the lack of adequate fertilizers and the government’s misleading promises on electricity provision. During his speech, Tikait detailed the struggles faced by farmers, such as the scarcity of essential resources like water and electricity and the growing problem of stray cattle. Additionally, he pointed out the irony in the government’s actions of installing electricity meters in farmers’ homes while promising free electricity.

The BKU leader also addressed the contentious issue of land acquisitions in Prayagraj, where farmlands are being taken for a bypass construction project without offering fair compensation to the affected farmers. He warned of launching a ‘Kisan Kranti’ movement in December if the government fails to resolve these issues promptly.

Thousands of farmers from Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and neighboring districts participated in the event. Prominent BKU figures, including State President Anuj Singh, District President Lalu Patel, and Divisional President Lalchand Yadav, also voiced their concerns.
