# Anglo American and IAEA will combat soil salinization with polyhalite

Publication Date: 29.11.2024, 14:00

This project will employ nuclear techniques to develop sustainable farming practices and combat the global issue of salt-affected soils, which currently impact approximately 932 million hectares worldwide. The project aims to test the effectiveness of different soil additives, including the mineral polyhalite, to enhance soil health and crop productivity.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with Anglo American, has embarked on a significant research initiative aimed at combating soil salinization. The joint project aims to mitigate global hunger and enhance agricultural sustainability.

The research will concentrate on developing climate-smart agricultural practices. These are designed to manage and mitigate the effects of salt-affected soils, which are increasingly becoming a global concern due to climate change, poor agricultural practices, and sea-level rise. Currently, an estimated 932 million hectares of soil worldwide are affected by salinization, posing significant challenges to agricultural productivity and environmental health.

A key component of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of various soil additives, including the polyhalite mineral, in reclaiming salt-affected soils. Polyhalite, which Anglo American is currently mining in the UK, is noted for its environmental benefits and nutrient content, potentially offering a superior alternative to traditional fertilizers.

The initiative is also set to explore the dynamics of nutrient release in soils, leveraging the IAEA’s expertise in isotopic techniques. These techniques are essential for tracing nutrient pathways and understanding their behavior in different soil conditions, which will be critical for enhancing crop productivity and sustainability in affected regions.
