Greg Hunt emphasizes the need for policy support to reduce import reliance and expand biofuels industry.

Nufarm CEO Greg Hunt has welcomed the Australian Government’s Food Security Preparedness Strategy as a vital step toward a more resilient agricultural sector. He highlighted the importance of ensuring reliable access to essential inputs such as seed, fertilizer, and crop protection products, noting that Australia remains heavily dependent on imports.

“Farmers need reliable access to essential inputs like seed, fertiliser, and crop protection products, yet Australia remains heavily dependent on imports,” Hunt said. “A fairer policy approach that supports local manufacturing of crop protection solutions will help secure our sovereign supply and protect national food security.”

Hunt also acknowledged the government’s commitment to exploring the potential of a domestic biofuels feedstock industry, which he believes could play a crucial role in the transition to low-carbon energy. He welcomed the establishment of a National Food Council, emphasizing the importance of giving industry stakeholders a voice in shaping the future of food and fuel production.

Nufarm also endorsed the government’s recent announcement of a $250 million investment in low-carbon liquid fuels, describing it as a significant step toward developing a local biofuels industry. “This funding will drive innovation and open new opportunities for farmers to supply feedstocks like Carinata, a sustainable oilseed grown for biofuel,” Hunt said. “Australia has the land, resources, and expertise to lead in renewable fuels, sustainable agriculture, and homegrown manufacturing.”
