# Canterra Seeds acquires Alliance Seed in move to grow Western Canada reach

Deal brings in established oat and wheat lines, expands grower access in Prairies.

CANTERRA SEEDS has acquired Alliance Seed from Paterson Grain, broadening its reach in Western Canada’s pedigreed seed market and adding several well-established crop varieties to its portfolio.

The deal brings varieties such as CDC Endure milling oats and AAC Leroy VB Canada Western Red Spring wheat under CANTERRA’s control and expands its distribution through Alliance’s network of seed growers.

Based in Winnipeg, Alliance Seed was previously owned by Paterson Grain, a family-run agribusiness with over a century of operations in Canadian agriculture. Alliance will continue operating as a standalone brand under the CANTERRA umbrella, with key staff remaining in place.

“The Alliance team has built strong relationships and a solid product line,” said Brent Derkatch, chief executive of CANTERRA SEEDS. “We believe we can support its growth and offer more value to Canadian producers.”

The acquisition complements CANTERRA’s existing investment in Limagrain Cereals Research Canada, a wheat breeding joint venture with France-based Limagrain. The company said the transaction aligns with its long-term commitment to crop innovation and grower collaboration.

Shane Paterson, director of trading and transportation at Paterson Grain and former president of Alliance Seed, said the companies shared a common approach. “We were looking for a partner that values service and continuity,” he said. “CANTERRA fits that role.”

Alliance Seed, founded with backing from Paterson, supplies pedigreed seed to a wide network of producers across the Prairie provinces. Its integration into CANTERRA’s operations is expected to widen market access and reinforce customer support.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
