KWS, the German plant breeding company, has entered into a strategic cooperation with a fast-growing vegan food brand Billie Green to advance development of protein-rich crops for use in meat alternatives. The initiative, announced Monday, September 15, will focus on the yellow pea, a protein-rich crop with potential for local cultivation in Europe. KWS will test its range of yellow pea varieties for their suitability in Billie Green’s products, with the goal of improving texture, nutritional quality, and flavor in plant-based meats. Billie Green, based in Osnabrück, Germany, has been one of the country’s leading vegan brands since its launch in 2022. Its product range includes cold cuts, snacks, and ready-to-cook meals. The company will integrate pea protein sourced through the partnership into future offerings. The initiative is designed to cover the entire value chain—from breeding and cultivation to processing and product development—while strengthening regional agriculture and supply chain resilience. “Our customers expect products that taste great and offer top quality,” said Billie Green Managing Director Georg Achterkamp. “The collaboration with KWS covers the entire value chain, from breeding suitable pea varieties, to European cultivation and processing into marketable products.” KWS will contribute its expertise in breeding, food analytics, and protein extraction, while Billie Green brings know-how in product development and marketing. “Together with Billie Green, we are shaping the future of plant-based nutrition by driving innovation and expanding the value chain—from seed to fork,” said Alexandra Molitor, Commercial Director Food Ingredients at KWS. Opting for locally grown yellow peas, the companies said, supports European agriculture, increases transparency in sourcing, and reduces reliance on imports. KWS, based in Einbeck, reported €1.68 billion in net sales in its 2023/24 fiscal year and invested more than €300 million in research and development. Billie Green is among the top three brands for vegan meat alternatives in Germany, with its vegan ham cubes and salami-style snacks leading their segments.
