# Alltech begins construction of $4.6 million biofertilizer plant in Kentucky

The new facility, supported by a USDA grant, will expand domestic production of biological fertilizers and reduce reliance on imported synthetic inputs.

Global agribusiness company Alltech has begun construction on a $4.6 million biofertilizer production facility at its global headquarters in Kentucky. The 15,000-square-foot plant will be the company’s first U.S. manufacturing site dedicated to biological crop inputs and is expected to produce more than 66,000 gallons of biofertilizers per shift each month.

The project aims to strengthen domestic capacity for sustainable crop production and lessen U.S. dependence on imported chemical fertilizers. Modeled after Alltech Crop Science (ACS) plants in Brazil and Spain, the new facility will also manufacture over 30 natural products designed to enhance soil health and crop performance, creating at least six full-time jobs.

The initiative is supported by a $2.34 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP), which was launched in 2022 to expand domestic production and affordability of fertilizer alternatives.

Alltech said the new plant will help deliver environmentally responsible solutions that promote soil fertility, stimulate root development and improve nutrient uptake. The company’s biological formulations use beneficial microorganisms to support long-term soil productivity while reducing environmental impacts associated with conventional fertilizer use.

Once operational, the facility will serve both domestic and international markets, contributing to U.S. export capacity for sustainable agricultural technologies.
