# Topsoe will supply its ammonia technology for ACWA Power’s Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia

Using Topsoe’s dynamic ammonia technology, the facility is designed to convert green hydrogen into ammonia while reducing costs and emissions.

Topsoe has been selected as the ammonia technology licensor for ACWA’s Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, a large-scale development aimed at producing green ammonia using renewable energy.

The Danish technology provider said its ammonia synthesis technology will be used to convert green hydrogen produced at the Yanbu site into ammonia. The project is being developed by ACWA Power, with engineering work carried out by Sinopec and Técnicas Reunidas under a front-end engineering design contract.

A final investment decision is expected in 2026, with commercial operations targeted for 2030. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to avoid around 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually compared with conventional ammonia production based on natural gas.

The Yanbu project is designed as a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen development. Under the current agreement, Topsoe’s technology will be used for the first ammonia production units, with a planned capacity of 2,700 metric tons per day. The partners have indicated that the concept could be replicated in subsequent phases.

Topsoe will also supply engineering services, proprietary equipment, and catalysts. Its dynamic ammonia technology enables production to adjust to fluctuations in renewable power supply, reducing the need for hydrogen storage and lowering capital and operating costs.

Green ammonia is increasingly viewed as a key component of energy transition strategies because it can be transported via existing infrastructure and used as a fuel, a hydrogen carrier, or a feedstock for hard-to-abate industries such as steel and cement.
