Deal boosts global reach and development capabilities for research-driven crop technologies.

HELM AG, a global agricultural solutions provider, has acquired UK-based biological crop technology company Unium Biosciences. The move positions HELM to strengthen the availability of research-backed biological and signalling compound technologies for growers in the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Unium brings a portfolio supported by more than 500 replicated field trials across multiple crops and growing conditions, forming a robust evidence base for product performance. The acquisition also gives the company access to enhanced registration, laboratory, and production capabilities, supporting regulatory approvals in key markets including the UK, EU, North and South America, and Africa.

The deal comes amid mounting pressures on crop production. Growers face rising pest and disease challenges, regulatory restrictions on conventional chemistries, and growing demand for low- or zero-chemical solutions. At the same time, global food demand is projected to rise as the world population nears 9 billion by 2050, while arable land per person continues to shrink, according to UN data.

John Haywood, Unium managing director, said the company would continue integrating biological products with conventional crop systems. “Becoming part of HELM gives Unium the platform to scale globally while staying focused on science-led innovation,” he said.

Jacob Shreve, HELM executive vice president of Crop Solutions, said the acquisition complements HELM’s international portfolio and accelerates development of sustainable crop technologies. “We aim to maintain continuity for existing customers while broadening access to research-driven solutions worldwide,” he said.

Unium will continue operating in the UK with its current team, focusing on trials, grower support, and data-driven biological solutions for modern farming.
