# Rwanda Fertilizer Company and One Acre Fund will expand fertilizer access for smallholder farmers

Rwanda Fertilizer Company and One Acre Fund have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand the production and distribution of customized fertilizers for smallholder farmers across Rwanda, marking a shift away from uniform fertilizer formulas toward soil-specific blends.

The agreement, signed on February 23 at RFC’s blending plant in the Bugesera Special Economic Zone, seeks to connect national soil data with local manufacturing and field-level delivery. The partners said the collaboration will rely on insights from the Rwanda Soil Information System and coordination with the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board to develop fertilizer blends tailored to different agro-ecological zones. Products such as Twihaze and Ongera are designed to improve nutrient efficiency, address soil constraints, and remain affordable for farmers.

Under the arrangement, RFC will produce customized blends at its Bugesera facility, which has an annual capacity of 100,000 metric tons, while One Acre Fund will manage farmer outreach, extension services, and distribution through its field network. The partners said joint demonstrations and training sessions will support adoption. The companies added that the initiative is intended to strengthen soil health management, raise productivity, and contribute to Rwanda’s broader food security and agricultural transformation goals.
