# High prices push U.S. farmers toward phosphate cutbacks this fall

A CHS agronomist says growers will shift spending toward potash and nutrient-efficiency products as DAP and MAP stay elevated.

U.S. farmers are likely to reduce phosphate fertilizer applications this fall as persistently high DAP and MAP prices force budget trade-offs, according to CHS agronomist Corey Klaphake, who covers southern Minnesota.

Klaphake told Brownfield Ag News on July 21 that phosphate cutbacks are the "big conversation" among growers planning their fall fertility programs. DAP currently averages roughly $910 per ton and MAP around $955 per ton — both well above year-ago levels. By contrast, potash and potassium prices have remained more stable at about $494 per ton, leading Klaphake to predict farmers will shift spending toward potash while seeking greater efficiency from their phosphate applications.

The expected phosphate cutbacks come as the Strait of Hormuz disruption continues to weigh on global sulfur and ammonia supply — both critical feedstocks for phosphate fertilizer production. Some agronomists recommend nutrient-enhancement products that improve the uptake of applied phosphorus, helping growers maintain yields with reduced application rates. The trend could pressure phosphate demand through the U.S. fall application season.
