Production of greenhouse vegetables in Russia may grow by 7.6% in 2021

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, in 2021, at least 1.45 million tons of vegetables will be grown in winter greenhouses, which is 7.6% more than last year.

As of February 2, 114.3 thousand tons of vegetables have been already produced in greenhouses, which is 15.6% higher the level of 2020 (98.9 thousand tons). Of the total volume, the harvest of cucumbers amounted to 75.3 thousand tons (+6.4%) and tomatoes 37.3 thousand tons (+40.8%).

Investments in greenhouse projects contribute to the growth of vegetable harvest. Since 2016, the area of greenhouse complexes has been expanding by more than a third and amounted to about 2.8 thousand hectares in 2020. The production volume during this time increased by 78%. At the end of last year, the growth of vegetable harvest in winter greenhouses exceeded 18%, with a decline in imports by 15.2% to 558.9 thousand tons.
