In 2021, the Krasnodar region plans to preserve the area under spring crops at the level of 1.8 million hectares, reported the Governor of the region Veniamin Kondratyev.

“About 1.8 million hectares of spring crops will be totally sown in the region, of which almost 740 thousand hectares will be taken for grain and legumes. The area of spring crops this year will be almost the same as in the previous one. We plan to increase the sowing of sugar beet, pea and export-oriented crops like soybean and winter rapeseed by more than 70 thousand hectares. This will help the region to increase the export volume and achieve the goals of the national project International Cooperation and Export,” said Veniamin Kondratyev.

According to his statement, the start of the 2021 sowing campaign will largely depend on the weather. The farmers already have seeds and are actively preparing fertilizers.

Grain crops are currently the bulk of exports. For the 2021 harvest, 1.8 million hectares were sown with winter crops, and wheat takes most of the area.

“There are concerns about rapeseed as there were not enough rains in autumn. We are constantly monitoring the situation and are ready to use all resources to save the harvest as much as possible,” Veniamin Kondratyev added.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
