Romania’s Azomureș – the country’s largest fertilizer maker – has halted all ammonia and fertilizer production for December, local media are reporting.

According to Economica.net, Azomureș took the decision in part because the Romanian government’s policies are ‘negatively affecting’ the domestic fertilizer industry – and, as a result, the company is struggling to remain operational.

Azomureș, which is part of the Ameropa group, will reportedly restart production no sooner than the beginning of January. The company has indicated that it does not intend to cut any jobs.

Azomureș’s CEO, Josh Zacharias, has called on the government to provide greater support to the fertilizer industry, saying that inflation, anti-competitive practices, and a future 1% tax on revenues are pushing it towards a crisis.
