FarmByte, a digital-first agro-food company under Johor Corporation (JCorp), is pioneering the use of cloud technology in Malaysia’s agricultural sector. Leveraging solutions from Amazon Web Services (AWS), FarmByte aims to transform agricultural practices and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.

By integrating AWS’s cloud infrastructure, data lakes, and machine learning tools, FarmByte provides comprehensive crop monitoring solutions. These tools offer farmers valuable insights, including weather updates, and optimal fertilizer and pesticide application rates, which are crucial for maximizing crop yields.

The data-driven approach adopted by FarmByte includes utilizing AWS Data Exchange for secure data sharing, Amazon S3, and AWS Glue Data Catalog for managing extensive data storage. These technologies enable FarmByte to perform detailed analyses that aid in crop pricing analytics, demand forecasting, and supply chain scheduling.

Moreover, FarmByte is developing innovative applications that employ Amazon Forecast and Amazon SageMaker to further enhance demand forecasting and crop grading processes. This not only helps in predicting supply chain lead times but also assists farmers in optimizing crop pricing strategies to ensure profitable and sustainable farming operations.

Mohd Fakhri Mohd Noor, Head of Digital at FarmByte, highlighted the company’s commitment to employing cutting-edge technology to advance Malaysia’s agrofood sector. “Our initiatives are aimed at bolstering national food security and providing farmers with the knowledge and tools needed for high-quality crop production,” he said.

Additionally, FarmByte is set to launch a B2B online marketplace by the third quarter of this year, which will showcase products from its network of farmers, facilitating direct transactions with retailers and wholesalers. This digital marketplace is part of FarmByte’s comprehensive suite of services that includes a mobile app offering real-time agricultural insights and a streamlined finance payment process for farmers.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
