Itafos boosts presence in Brazil with new office in Western Bahia

Itafos, the American multinational specializing in phosphate fertilizers, is advancing its growth strategy with a new expansion in Brazil. The company, headquartered in Houston and currently operating a facility in Arraias, Tocantins, is set to open a new office in Luís Eduardo Magalhães, located in western Bahia.

Bahia, which currently accounts for approximately 20% of Itafos’ sales volume, is a strategic focus for the company. The new office aims to boost the company’s market share in the region to 30% by the end of 2025. The decision to establish a presence in Luís Eduardo Magalhães reflects the region’s advantageous logistics, with its proximity to major agricultural areas and its strategic location just 120 kilometers from the Tocantins-Bahia border.

The expansion comes as Itafos seeks to leverage the region’s substantial grain production and strengthen its relationships with local farmers and partners. Felipe Coutas, President of Itafos in Brazil, emphasized the company’s commitment to growth: “We are projecting continued expansion until 2026, aiming to become a significant national supplier, particularly in Western Bahia. Our products are well-suited to the local agricultural needs.”

In 2023, Itafos resumed production of its I-Active reactive natural phosphate, known for its high solubility and IBD certification. The company is among the few in Brazil to produce this type of product from a sedimentary source, catering to various agricultural needs, including perennial and semi-perennial crops, land clearing, phosphating, and systemic fertilization.

Additionally, Itafos has entered the Brazilian acidified fertilizer market with the launch of Super Forte Duo, a product designed for immediate plant absorption, particularly beneficial for cerrado vegetation.

With an annual installed capacity of approximately 500,000 tons of fertilizers and 220,000 tons of sulfuric acid, Itafos was the third-largest distributor of sulfuric acid in Brazil in 2023. The new office in Luís Eduardo Magalhães is scheduled to open in October 2024, marking a significant step in the company’s regional growth strategy.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
