Syngenta debuts Cropwise AI — pioneering precision agriculture solution

On September 30, 2024, Syngenta Group introduced new Cropwise AI solution at the World AgriTech Innovation Summit held in London. This new generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) system is crafted to enhance the efficiency of agronomic advisors and growers by optimizing crop management practices using state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and extensive data analytics.

Cropwise AI utilizes the robust library of Agronomic Models within the Cropwise Insight Engine, which includes more than 20 years of weather data, soil conditions, upwards of 80,000 observations on crop growth stages, and historical yield data from both research and on-farm trials. This data is integrated with Syngenta’s comprehensive agronomic expertise to provide growers with customized advice on input applications, product placement, and pest and disease management strategies in a straightforward natural language.

According to Feroz Sheikh, Chief Information and Digital Officer at Syngenta Group, “Cropwise AI represents a significant milestone in our digital transformation journey. By harnessing our deep agronomic knowledge alongside cutting-edge AI, we are empowering growers with data-driven decisions, potentially increasing yields by up to 5%.”

The system’s features include tailored seed recommendations, predictive modeling to forecast crop growth and yield potential, and precision agriculture techniques for optimized input application. Syngenta’s integration of the GHX 2.0 app earlier this year has also enabled more dynamic interaction with farmer data, enhancing the management of agronomic challenges and diseases such as Tar Spot.

Looking forward, Syngenta plans to expand Cropwise AI’s capabilities with advanced disease and pest management tools using computer vision and image recognition, as well as sustainability analytics to evaluate and reduce the environmental impact of farming practices.

Elizabeth Fastiggi, Global Head of Agriculture at AWS, commented on the partnership with Syngenta, “Cropwise AI is an industry-leading example of how GenAI can address critical agricultural challenges. This tool revolutionizes decision support, facilitating access to expert advice and optimizing productivity across the agri-food system.”

Cropwise AI is currently available to select customer groups in the United States and Brazil, with plans to extend its reach to European markets in the near future.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
