Syngenta executive named chair of American Seed Trade Association

The American Seed Trade Association
has named Dave Treinen, an executive at Syngenta, as its new chair for 2025–26, as the group seeks to strengthen its role in representing the US seed industry during a period of increasing regulatory, trade, and sustainability pressures.
Mr. Treinen, Head of GreenLeaf Genetics, a Syngenta division that supplies corn, soybean, and wheat genetics to independent seed companies, succeeds Dan Foor. The appointment was confirmed at the association’s annual leadership summit in Washington, D.C., and took effect July 1.
In remarks to members, Mr. Treinen emphasized the need to deepen industry engagement and develop future leadership. “Activation is not a one-time event—it’s an ongoing process,” he said. “The future of our industry depends on emerging leaders.”
ASTA, founded in 1883 and based in Alexandria, VA, represents more than 700 companies involved in seed production, plant breeding, and related industries. While focused on the US market, the group plays a role in international discussions around phytosanitary rules, intellectual property protections, and seed movement across borders—areas that have gained attention amid shifting trade conditions and increasing climate-related risks.
The global commercial seed market was valued at approximately $68 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach nearly $83 billion by 2030. Growth is being driven by demand for climate-resilient crop varieties, expanded biotech adoption, and rising global food security concerns. At the same time, producers face increased scrutiny over genetic technologies and mounting pressure to align with environmental targets.
The leadership change comes as regulators in several key markets, including the European Union and Brazil, weigh adjustments to their gene-editing and biotechnology approval frameworks. In the US, the Department of Agriculture is moving forward with efforts to modernize seed import and export documentation, with potential implications for companies operating in international markets.
Mr. Treinen has more than three decades of experience in the seed sector, including prior roles at Monsanto, DuPont/Pioneer, and American Cyanamid. He joined Syngenta in 2017 and has since led GreenLeaf Genetics, which serves clients across North America.
Syngenta, based in Switzerland and owned by China National Chemical Corp., is one of the world’s largest agricultural technology firms, with operations in more than 90 countries. Its global footprint places it at the center of ongoing debates over food production, innovation, and regulatory harmonization.
