German farmers warned of nitrogen fertilizer shortages

The high cost of natural gas can lead to an acute shortage of nitrogen fertilizers, which in turn will cause a drop in crop yields in Germany by 30-40%, said Joachim Rukwied, President of Deutsche Bauernverband.
According to his statement, normal natural gas prices should be a priority to ensure the stable operation of mineral fertilizer plants, farms and food industries.
Deutsche Bauernverband, along with other farmers’ associations, called on the German authorities to rethink their policies: all restrictions that lead to a shortage of natural gas and, as a result, food must be removed.
“We need to focus on sustainable agriculture,” their message says.
