Russia’s Sakhalin region pioneers tunnel greenhouses construction

In Sakhalin’s Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk city district of Russia, “Gifts of Sakhalin” farm is pioneering the construction of the Far East’s only tunnel greenhouses, occupying a 1-hectare area. Supported regionally, this infrastructure will enable the cultivation of berries throughout the year.

Established in 2022, the farm initially aimed to produce potatoes and vegetables but shifted focus to berry crops, predominantly strawberries. This season, the farm harvested over 20 tons of strawberries from two hectares of open ground—an output four times greater than the previous year. Future plans include diversifying crops to include raspberries, blueberries, and honeysuckles, with 8,500 raspberry plants recently planted in anticipation of next year’s harvest.

The strategic shift towards tunnel greenhouse construction, expected to conclude this year, is intended to facilitate early and year-round berry production. These greenhouses are recognized for their durability and ability to withstand diverse weather conditions. Their arched shape optimally distributes light and heat, creating ideal conditions for berry crops, promising a flavorful and abundant yield.

Additionally, the farm is enhancing its premises with community-focused amenities such as a children’s playground, a small café, and a public square, welcoming residents and visitors of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

State support has played a crucial role in the farm’s development. In addition to subsidies for greenhouse construction, the Ministry of Agriculture and Trade of the Sakhalin Region provided 16 million rubles in 2023, aiding in the purchase of planting materials and specialized agricultural equipment.

The Sakhalin region is committed to developing small-scale farming, which is vital for food security and sustainable rural development. An extensive system of state support measures for the farming community is in place to bolster these initiatives.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
