ICL strengthens foothold in China with $170 million AMP Holdings deal

ICL, a global leader in specialty minerals, has entered into a substantial five-year agreement with AMP Holdings Group Co. Ltd., a key Chinese agricultural distributor. Valued at approximately $170 million, this deal is a significant step forward for ICL’s Growing Solutions business, underscoring its strategic ambitions in the agricultural sector.

This partnership, which focuses on specialty water-soluble fertilizers designed for drip irrigation, targets high-value crops such as apples, watermelons, vegetables, strawberries, ginger, and grapes. The agreement includes a minimum purchase commitment and exclusive terms regarding brand and regional distribution, reflecting a strong alignment with ICL’s growth objectives.

China’s demand for these specialty fertilizers is rapidly growing, driven by the expansion of high-value crops and increased adoption of drip irrigation. Factors such as extreme weather conditions, diverse crop varieties, and a shrinking agricultural workforce have contributed to the surge in drip irrigation use, making China the largest global market for fertigation.

Elad Aharonson, President of ICL Growing Solutions, emphasized the significance of the Chinese market, noting that ICL’s soluble fertilizers are already leading in the region. He expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with AMP Holdings, highlighting its potential to enhance ICL’s presence in China’s premium specialty fertilizer sector. Ye Hong, General Manager of AMP Holdings, echoed this optimism, focusing on the collaboration’s goal of delivering innovative specialty solutions to Chinese farmers.

ICL has recently introduced a phosphate and potassium suspension solution for drone application, reflecting its ongoing focus on innovation in the agricultural sector. As a major potash fertilizer manufacturer, ICL aims to enhance agricultural productivity with its new products.

AMP Holdings, with over ten years in the distribution of irrigation-based specialty products in China, has built a strong market presence. Its extensive distribution network and insightful partnership with ICL further consolidate its role in the Chinese agricultural market.

The alliance represents a key development for ICL, enhancing its position in China and aligning with its objectives in the region. The partnership with AMP Holdings is expected to support future growth and contribute to ICL’s presence in the Chinese agricultural market.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
