Fatima Fertilizer has broken new ground in Pakistan’s corporate sector, becoming the country’s first company to officially partner with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to adopt the SDG Impact Framework. This initiative underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability, as it meticulously aligns its operations with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The recent launch of a campaign further illustrates this commitment, detailing Fatima Fertilizer’s approach to integrating the impact framework across eight strategically selected areas of its business.

At the forefront of these efforts, Fatima Fertilizer has embedded the impact assessment into its daily operations, mapping actions that range from energy innovation to community empowerment. The company has prioritized renewable solar energy to reduce fossil fuel reliance, contributing to SDG 7, and it is actively deploying digital tools to support rural women and their communities under SDG 9. Additionally, Fatima Fertilizer has implemented practices that promote responsible fertilizer use, aiming to help farmers maintain sustainable agriculture (SDG 12) and bolster national food security by increasing crop yields by at least 10 percent, in line with SDG 8.

Other key initiatives include the establishment of Pakistan’s first internationally accredited soil and water testing lab, which supports sustainable land management and protects biodiversity (SDG 15). The company also works to empower rural women and mitigate post-harvest losses, enhancing economic resilience in rural areas as part of SDG 5. The Sarsabz Digital App, which provides real-time weather updates, further reflects the company’s commitment to digital empowerment and resource optimization in agriculture.

Reflecting on the company’s role as a sustainability leader, COO Asad Murad emphasized that this transition represents a pivotal moment in Fatima Fertilizer’s journey toward sustainable development and social responsibility. According to Murad, the partnership with UNDP signifies Fatima Fertilizer’s continued influence within Pakistan’s corporate sector as a model for achieving the SDGs.

Director of Marketing and Sales Rabel Sadozai noted that  aligning with the SDGs not only elevates corporate responsibility but also sets a new benchmark for the fertilizer industry in Pakistan. The company’s initiatives, from empowering women in rural communities to fostering sustainable farming, are structured to drive lasting positive impacts across the environment and for stakeholders alike.

As the first Pakistani company to adopt the SDG Impact Framework with UNDP, Fatima Fertilizer hopes to set a precedent for sustainable development in the nation’s corporate sector, aiming to inspire other businesses to incorporate environmental responsibility as a fundamental part of their operations.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
