BASF and Yara terminate U.S. Gulf Coast low-carbon ammonia project

BASF and Yara International have ended their joint initiative to develop a low-carbon ammonia production facility with carbon capture and storage on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The companies said the decision reflects their intention to prioritize projects with the strongest potential for value creation. Yara confirmed it will continue to pursue its ammonia strategy, assessing equity investment opportunities in the United States to shape its project portfolio.
BASF and Yara remain long-standing partners and will continue to operate their jointly owned ammonia plant at BASF’s Freeport, Texas, site. BASF also produces ammonia at its facilities in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium, while Yara operates the world’s largest ammonia system, with plants across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
The two companies emphasized that despite the discontinuation of this project, both remain committed to advancing low-emission solutions in ammonia and fertilizer production.
