Japan moves to strengthen domestic farm drone industry with Sumitomo–NTT alliance

Japan is stepping up efforts to strengthen its domestic agricultural drone industry, as Sumitomo Corporation and NTT e-Drone Technology launched a marketing alliance aimed at expanding sales of locally produced farm drones.
The partnership, effective February 2026, follows the transfer of agricultural drone development assets from Nileworks to NTT e-Drone Technology and the subsequent dissolution of the startup. The move consolidates domestic drone capabilities under a larger industrial platform at a time when Japan’s agricultural sector is seeking greater technological self-reliance.
Agricultural drones are increasingly used worldwide for precision pesticide application, field mapping and crop monitoring. In Japan, adoption has accelerated amid acute labor shortages and a rapidly aging farm workforce. Yet the domestic market remains heavily reliant on foreign-made equipment, a dependence that industry participants have linked to potential supply-chain vulnerabilities and security concerns.
Against that backdrop, the new alliance combines Sumitomo’s agricultural input sales network — spanning Japan and overseas markets — with NTT e-Drone Technology’s development and manufacturing operations. The companies said they plan to promote domestically developed drone products and related services while building training and maintenance frameworks to support adoption.
The agreement follows a strategic review by Nileworks’ shareholders, including Sumitomo, who in June 2025 opted to transfer the company’s agricultural drone development resources to NTT e-Drone Technology. Remaining businesses were sold separately, and Nileworks was dissolved in November 2025. Shareholders concluded that industry consolidation offered a more viable path than continuing as an independent developer amid technical and market challenges.
The partners also plan to conduct joint market research in Vietnam, signaling interest in Southeast Asia, where demand for precision agriculture technologies is growing. NTT e-Drone Technology said feedback from sales activities will be incorporated into research and development, reflecting a shift toward a market-driven product strategy.
For global agribusiness, the alliance underscores a broader trend: countries seeking to localize critical agricultural technologies while positioning domestic firms to compete in regional export markets.
