Sri Lanka plans QR code system to control fertilizer distribution

Sri Lanka is preparing to introduce a QR code–based system to regulate fertilizer distribution as part of efforts to improve transparency and prevent irregularities in the supply chain. Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha said authorities plan to pilot the digital system before expanding it nationwide, allowing officials to better track fertilizer allocation to farmers.
The government says fertilizer stocks are currently sufficient for the ongoing cultivation season and that measures are in place to avoid supply disruptions. However, the minister warned that some private intermediaries have been selling fertilizer at inflated prices of about LKR 12,000–13,000 (approximately USD 40–43), describing the practice as exploitation of farmers and consumers.
Officials said the Consumer Affairs Authority has been instructed to monitor the market and take action against unjustified price increases. Looking ahead, the government also plans to import additional fertilizer shipments from China by May to strengthen reserves and ensure continued availability for future planting seasons.
