Imports of potassium chloride to India may fall

China continues to be the main consumer of potassium chloride this year. According to the estimates of Uralkali experts, in the first half of 2021, China’s imports increased by 18.5% to 4.6 million tons.

“Despite the lower volume of sea shipments under the concluded contracts, we expect a stable volume consumption of potassium chloride by the end of the year. A possible imports decline will be offset by a decrease in inventory balances and an increase in domestic production,” says the press-release of Uralkali, dedicated to its 1H2021 performance results.

India may face a significant decline in imports of potassium chloride. The volume of imports in the first half of the year amounted to about 1.5 million tons, which is almost a quarter lower compared to the same period last year. Amid the low contracted volumes, India is steadily decreasing its inventory of potassium chloride. According to the forecast of Uralkali, the volume of supplies of potassium chloride by the end of 2021 will amount to about 4 million tons.
