Denmark unveils new green ammonia facility

A consortium including Topsoe, Skovgaard Energy, and Vestas has inaugurated a green ammonia plant in Ramme, Northwest Jutland, Denmark. This pioneering facility, underpinned by 81 million Danish Krone ($12M) from the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), is set to revolutionize how renewable energy is utilized in industrial processes.
The plant integrates advanced technologies that allow it to dynamically adapt to fluctuating power outputs from renewable sources. It pairs this flexibility with a robust system for electrolysis and ammonia synthesis, aiming to optimize production efficiency and cost-effectiveness. By harnessing power from newly installed solar panels and existing wind turbines, the facility is expected to produce 5,000 tons of green ammonia annually, potentially offsetting 8,200 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
The plant underscores the consortium’s commitment to leading the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. Skovgaard Energy has been at the forefront of sustainable energy within Denmark for nearly three decades, while Vestas continues to be a global leader in wind energy solutions. Topsoe brings its expertise in technology for the energy transition, aiming to facilitate the global shift towards sustainable energy practices.
