Grupa Azoty secures 33 million euro in EU funding for Police Seaport expansion

Polish fertilizer producer Grupa Azoty has announced the acquisition of over 33 million euro in funding from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) to expand the Police Seaport. The project, with a total value exceeding EUR 48.3 million, involves constructing a railway hub and associated technical infrastructure, aiming to bolster the port’s accessibility and cargo handling capacity.

The development of railway line no. 437 to Police Seaport, managed by the Police Seaport Authority (ZMPP), is designed to improve both land and sea accessibilities, aligning with Grupa Azoty’s strategic objectives to amplify the business significance of its port facilities. “This initiative will enhance the Police Port’s role not only for Grupa Azoty but for the entire chemical industry and our potential business partners across various sectors,” said Andrzej Dawidowski, Vice President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A. and President of Grupa Azoty Police.

The Port of Police (in Polish generally Port Police) is a Polish seaport and deep water harbor in Police, Poland, located on the west bank of the Oder River. It is the fourth-busiest port in the country.

The port’s strategic position allows for the accommodation of ships with drafts of up to 11 meters. The completion of the railway siding, along with ongoing investments to increase bulk and liquid material handling capacities, are expected to elevate the port’s global significance. Dawidowski highlighted the advanced stages of negotiations with major investors to establish new transshipment bases at the port, which will further reduce transportation costs.

In collaboration with PKP Polish Railway Lines S.A., the project will see both parties finance their respective parts; ZMPP’s share will be covered by EU funds and its own resources, while PKP PLK’s contribution will come from the state budget. The Police Seaport Authority is tasked with completing the railway hub and technical infrastructure by the first quarter of 2028, which includes around 6 km of tracks, 2.82 km of internal roads, a control tower, and a railway traffic control system.

The expanded infrastructure will also enable direct rail transport of goods to the port for the first time, creating more efficient conditions for transporting raw materials and enhancing the port’s competitiveness while fostering environmentally friendly rail transport.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
