John Deere acquires Sentera to expand precision ag capabilities

John Deere has announced the acquisition of Sentera, a Minnesota-based company specializing in remote imagery solutions for agriculture. The move is designed to strengthen John Deere’s existing technology portfolio by providing farmers and agricultural service providers with improved tools to collect and analyze data, ultimately supporting better decision-making to boost farm profitability, efficiency, and sustainability.
Sentera’s technology focuses on aerial data capture through high-resolution cameras compatible with most major drone platforms. Their FieldAgent software enables users to assess crop health, identify stressors such as weeds, pests, or disease, and create actionable insights. One notable feature, SMARTSCRIPT Weeds, generates customized herbicide prescriptions with individual nozzle control for sprayers, allowing precise application that reduces waste.
Chris Winkler, Director of Digital Software and Solutions at John Deere, emphasized the strategic value of the acquisition. “Combining Sentera’s imagery capabilities with the John Deere Operations Center will enable farmers and trusted advisors to seamlessly gather and integrate agronomic data, understand real-time conditions, and turn data into insights that drive decisions in the field throughout the growing season,” Winkler said.
Sentera’s drone-enabled scouting tools generate detailed weed maps that translate directly into targeted spraying prescriptions. These maps can also be used to evaluate crop stand uniformity and monitor disease pressure and pest activity. By integrating these capabilities, John Deere aims to meet farmers at different levels of technology adoption, complementing its advanced precision agriculture solutions such as See & Spray.
The acquisition has been welcomed by industry stakeholders. Nick Einck, Director of Agronomy at Chandler Coop in Minnesota, noted the practical benefits. “Sentera’s scouting solutions allow us to quickly gather data across more acres and with greater detail, enabling us to customize our approach to each field. Coupled with the John Deere technologies we already leverage today, we can be more efficient and deliver even better outcomes for our customers.”
Under the deal, Sentera will continue to supply cameras to drone manufacturers and sell directly to farmers, agronomists, and ag retailers. John Deere will also keep its Operations Center open to other drone imagery providers, maintaining choice for customers.
Sentera’s CEO Brian Wenngatz commented on the acquisition: “John Deere provides us a great outcome and is exactly the right home for Sentera. They are the industry benchmark for innovation in precision agriculture and share our belief that the future of access to these technologies is built on trusted relationships, measurable insights, and scalable platforms.”
This acquisition marks a significant step in John Deere’s ongoing effort to lead innovation in precision agriculture, a sector critical to meeting the growing global demand for food and sustainable farming practices.
