SCIO launches upgraded corn moisture scanner for faster, lab-grade analysis in the field

SCIO, the ag-tech startup formerly known as Consumer Physics, has launched the SCIO Mini 2, a next-generation handheld device for measuring corn moisture content in the field. Building on the success of the SCIO Mini 1, the new model delivers faster, more robust, and lab-grade analysis without the need to shell or grind samples, offering substantial time savings for farmers and seed producers.

The SCIO Mini 2 integrates near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and synchronizes with SCIO’s cloud-based platform to support real-time decision-making for harvest timing, storage planning, and field management. The updated version features a sleeker design, a built-in corn ear accessory, and an improved battery that supports over 1,000 scans per charge. The device is dust- and water-resistant (IP53-rated), charges via USB-C, and connects wirelessly to mobile apps and cloud dashboards via Bluetooth.

“With over 13 million scans across 186 countries, we’ve seen the value of real-time, non-destructive testing in agriculture,” said Damian Goldring, SCIO’s Co-founder and CTO. “SCIO Mini 2 is designed to give users lab-level precision instantly, even in demanding field conditions.”

Key enhancements of SCIO Mini 2 over the previous model

  • Built-in corn accessory for streamlined, attachment-free scanning
  • Extended battery life, enabling more than 1,000 scans per charge
  • Enhanced durability, allowing operation in rugged outdoor environments
  • Faster scan processing through improved optics and internal components
  • Modernized ergonomic design for better comfort and handling

According to SCIO, major agribusinesses such as Syngenta and Corteva have already adopted the SCIO Mini 2, citing improved efficiency and reduced testing times. Some users report cutting moisture testing durations by more than half.

The U.S. corn sector, which produced 15.3 billion bushels valued at $73.9 billion in 2023, faces rising costs and narrowing harvest windows. Real-time field analysis tools like the SCIO Mini 2 are becoming essential for optimizing yield, quality, and profitability.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
